  Author Guidelines

Basic Criteria

Articles should be written in English (using American English spelling) and meet the following basic criteria: the material is original, the information is important and of high scientific interest, the writing is clear (clinical or laboratory jargon is to be avoided), the study methods are appropriate, the data are valid, and the conclusions are reasonable and supported by the data.
Submitted manuscripts are considered with the understanding that they have not been published previously in print or electronic format (except in abstract or poster form) and are not under consideration by another publication or electronic medium.
The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to reject manuscripts that do not comply with these basic criteria.

Article Categories

The categories of articles that are published are described below.

Review Articles
These should aim to provide the reader with a balanced overview of an important and topical subject in sport and exercise sciences and fitness, and should be systematic and critical assessments of literature and data sources. All articles and data sources reviewed should include information about the specific type of study or analysis, population, intervention, exposure, and tests or outcomes. All articles or data sources should be selected systematically for inclusion in the review and critically evaluated.

Original Articles
These may be randomized trials, intervention studies, studies of screening and diagnostic tests, laboratory and animal studies, cohort studies, cost-effectiveness analyses, case-control studies, and surveys with high response rates, that represent new and significant contributions to exercise science, physical fitness and physical education.
Each manuscript should state the objective/hypothesis, design and methods (including the study setting and dates, patients/participants with inclusion and exclusion criteria, or data sources and how these were selected for the study), the essential features of any interventions, the main outcome measures, the main results, discussion placing the results in context with the published literature, and conclusions.

Case Reports
These are short discussions of a case or case series with unique features not previously described.

Communications
These are research notes on topics such as test or equipment development, profile evaluations, data re-analysis, and document verification.

Manuscript Submission

Manuscripts must be submitted with a cover letter stating the following: 1) all authors agree with the content of the article and approve of its submission to the journal; 2) the article is original and has not been and will not be submitted for publication in other journals; 3) the experiments reported in the article were undertaken in compliance with the current laws of the country in which the experiments were performed. Authors will be held responsible for false statements.

Three copies of the manuscript (including tables and figures, if applicable) must be submitted, together with one 3.5" floppy disk containing the submitted manuscript in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows 95 or Microsoft Rich Text Format. The disk should be labeled clearly with the authors' names and the title of the paper.

Manuscript submissions and related correspondence should be addressed to:

Professor Frank H. Fu
Editor-in-Chief
Journal of Exercise Science and Fitness
Dr. Stephen Hui Research Centre for Physical Recreation and Wellness
Room NAB210, David C. Lam Building, Shaw Campus
Hong Kong Baptist University, Kowloon Tong
Hong Kong SAR, China

For e-mail submission, the manuscript MUST be saved in both MS Word and PDF formats. Please e-mail the manuscript and cover letter to the Editor-in-Chief at jesf@scsepf.org.

Please note that manuscripts submitted by e-mail should not also be submitted by mail.

Important Information

  • The article saved in Microsoft Word document format (*.doc) should be prepared in the simplest form possible. We will add in the correct font, font size, margins and so on according to our house style.
  • You may use automatic page numbering, but please avoid other kinds of automatic formatting such as footnotes, endnotes, headers and footers.
  • Please put text, references, tables, figures, and legends in one file, with each table and figure on a new page.
  • Please note that the cost of color illustrations will be charged to the author.

Applicable for e-mail submission only

  • To keep the total file size small, please insert figures (pictures/photographs) into the MS Word document as low resolution *.JPEG or *.TIFF files.
  • Figures that are line drawings or photographs must also be submitted separately as high resolution picture files, in *.EPS or *.TIFF format, and not pasted into the word document. Please ensure that files are supplied at the correct resolution: line artwork = minimum of 1000 dpi; halftone artwork = minimum of 300 dpi; combination artwork (line + tone) = minimum of 500 dpi.
  • If you are unable to submit such figures by e-mail, please post three sets of the original figures to the Editor-in-Chief at the above address. They will not be returned.

Manuscript Preparation

All text should be typed double-spaced on one side of A4 (297 x 210 mm) paper, with outer margins of 3 cm.
Each section of the manuscript should begin on a new page, in the following order: First Title Page; Second Title Page; Abstract and Key Words; Introduction; Methods; Results; Discussion; Acknowledgments; References; Tables; Figures and Figure Legends.

First Title Page
The First Title Page should contain the following information:

  • category of paper
  • manuscript title
  • short running title not exceeding 50 characters
  • the names (spelled out in full) of all the authors and their institutions
  • corresponding author details (e-mail address, mailing address, telephone and fax numbers)

Second Title Page
The Second Title Page should contain the manuscript title only.

Abstract & Key Words
Page 3 should contain a concise and factual English abstract of no more than 250 words. The following information should be included: rational for the study; methods used; most important/significant results; conclusions.
Up to 5 relevant key words/index terms in alphabetical order should be provided for indexing purposes. These should not simply be taken from the manuscript title but should be representative of the content of the article, and be characteristic of the terminology used within the particular field of the study. They should be taken from Index Medicus (Medical Subject Headings, MeSH) or be composed by analogy on the same principle.

Abbreviations
Where a term/definition will be continually referred to, it must be written in full, followed by the subsequent abbreviation in parentheses, when it first appears in the Abstract and again in the main body of the text. Thereafter, the abbreviation may be used. Author-invented abbreviations should be avoided.

Units
Please use Systeme International (SI) units. Where the SI unit is not the conventional unit, then the conventional unit should be included in parentheses.
Use the metric system for the expression of length, area, mass, and volume. Temperatures are to be given in degrees Celsius. Blood pressure values which are to be reported in mmHg.
Unit abbreviations should use the power convention, e.g. kg-1.

Drug Names
Use the recommended international non-proprietary name (rINN) for medicinal substances, unless the specific trade name of a drug is directly relevant to the discussion.

Footnotes
Footnotes should be avoided within the text. Such explanatory material can usually be incorporated into the text in parentheses.
For tables or figures with 10 or fewer footnotes, the following symbols are used in the order shown:
      * (asterisk)
      (dagger)
      (double dagger)
      (section mark)
      || (parallel mark)
      (paragraph symbol)
      # (number sign)
      ** (repeated asterisk)
      (repeated dagger)
      (repeated double dagger)

For tables or figures with more than 10 footnotes, superscript lowercase letters should be used to denote the footnotes, taking care to ensure that the superscript footnote letters are distinguished clearly from those used for data elements. Footnote symbols and footnote letters should not be used together in the same table or figure.

References
Each reference citation within the main body of the text should be by name and year (in descending chronologic order) in parentheses; for example, (Powers 1995) or (Tsang 2001; Wang & Eben 1993a; Wang & Eben 1993b; Chung 1988). When a paper with more than two authors is cited, only the first is named in the text, e.g. (Dempsey et al. 2001).
All references cited in the text are to be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order under the first author's name. Works by two authors only are listed alphabetically by the second author's name, then chronologically. Chronologic order is used for works by more than two authors. If there is more than one work by the same author(s) in the same year, then a, b, c, etc., are added to the year both in the text and in the list of references. All authors of a reference should be listed.

Examples are given below.

Fu F, Leung ML (2003). Health promotion, wellness and leisure: major components of quality of life. Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong.

Louie L, Eston R, Rowlands A, Tong T, Ingledew K, Fu F (1999). Validity of heart rate, pedometry, and accelerometry for estimating the energy cost of activity in Hong Kong Chinese Boys. Pediatr Ex Sci 11:229-39.

Younes M (1991). Determinants of thoracic excursions during exercise. In: Whipp BJ, Wasserman K (eds). Exercise: Pulmonary Physiology and Pathophysiology. Marcel Dekker, New York, pp 49-50.

  • Abstracts should not be cited unless the abstract is the only available reference to an important concept.
  • Do not cite uncompleted work or work that has not yet beenaccepted for publication as references.
  • Abbreviations for journals should conform to those used in Index Medicus.
  • Always give the last page number as well. If there is only 1 page, state if the article is an abstract or letter.
  • If you must cite information from a website, please provide the author information, article title, the website address and the date you accessed the information.
  • Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their references and for correct text citation.

Tables
Tables should be labeled in Arabic numerals and titled concisely. Number all tables in the order of their citation in the text. Tables should be typed double-spaced in as simple a form as possible and should be comprehensible without reference to the text. Data from tables should not be repeated in the text or figures.

Figures
The number of figures should be restricted to the minimum necessary to support the textual material. Previously published figures are not usually accepted. Please note that the cost of color illustrations will be charged to the author.
Number all figures in the order of their citation in the text (figures that are to appear together should be grouped together whenever possible). All figures must be accompanied by legends that are short, concise, and which provide a brief, self-sufficient description of the figure. Information given in the legends should not be repeated in the text.
All figures, whether photographs, graphs or diagrams, must be clearly labeled on the back with the figure number, top of the figure, the manuscript title, and the principal author's name, using a soft lead pencil or stick-on labels.
Photographs should be in the form of unmounted, unretouched glossy prints (about 3 x 5 inches in size). Any patient identification should be obscured. Do not mark directly on the prints. Indicators/arrows and labels may be marked on a photocopy of the original print to indicate subtle but salient points.
Illustrations, graphs, charts, etc. should be drawn with black ink on white paper and should preferably be done by a professional illustrator. Arrows and other symbols must be of professional quality and of a size permitting some reduction in the final copy.
